THE CALGARY HIGHLANDERS

Description

A silver jumper broaching on a bunch of thistles and, on the whole, a beaver lying on a log surrounded by maple leaves, all natural, accompanied by the head of the royal crown with the same accosting of two silver listels each adorned with a frieze of natural thistles and, at the tip, a similar listel, the latter accompanied by a listel of gules inscribed CALGARY HIGHLANDERS in silver letters.

Symbolism

The maple leaves and the beaver represent service to Canada, and the crown, service to the sovereign. The beaver on a log surrounded by maple leaves and surmounted by the crown was adapted from the badge of the 10th Battalion, of the Canadian Expeditionary Force from 1914 to 1920. The thistle, floral emblem of Scotland, and the long necklace, or cross of Saint Andrew, patron of Scotland, are frequently found on the badges of mountain regiments. "CALGARY HIGHLANDERS" is a variant of the regiment's name.
